What is Champions Boxing
(PROGRAMS OFFERED BELOW BUT READ THIS FIRST)
We are a boxing and specialized fitness gym in Pelham (Birmingham), Alabama. Champions Boxing began operations in June of 2001 in a building Curt built in hi backyard. We have moved three times to accommodate our growing membership. We specialize in boxing for fitness or competition but offer private boxing lessons or a fitness only. membership We are located about 10-15 minutes from downtown Birmingham,in the city of Pelham, which is just outside the city of Hoover. We are an officially chartered and registered boxing gym with USA Boxing.
The gym director and head coach is Curt McCune. He has been involved in the sport of boxing for over 24 years as a competitor, trainer and coach. Curt won seven amateur awards and championships while compiling a record of 55-3, plus over 25 exhibitions, in amateur competition from 1983 to 1994. He has also trained in California and in Las Vegas. Most notably at the Nevada Partners Boxing Gym where many top level professional boxers train. Curt is a certified Level II Coach with USA Boxing.
Curt can teach you the boxing skills that you need to win in the ring. Curt's first hand knowledge of the sport was gained by competing and training in the sport for over 24 years. He learned his skills from several very knowledgeable boxing coaches and trainers over the years, especially in Las Vegas. The basics are stressed from the beginning. You will start off learning the correct stance, hand placement, footwork, the basic punches and how to punch correctly. You will build your boxing knowledge from the ground up so you will have a solid foundation to build on. You will also start getting your body in "boxing condition", so you can concentrate on learning boxing not wondering if you can take another breath or not.
You must have patience and a strong desire to learn the art of boxing. There is so much more to boxing than just throwing your hands towards a bag or opponent. It is very important that you have an open mind and understand that it takes time to learn the proper techniques involved in boxing. You will also condition your whole body so you will have the proper physical conditioning that is required for boxing. We want people who are serious about learning to box but want to have fun while learning the sport. You will be brought into the sport at your own fitness level and slowly increase your stamina and fitness level.
When a new boxer is ready to spar, they won't be put into the ring with someone who will take advantage of them or try to make them look bad. We don't spar every day but concentrate on learning the proper technique and building boxing skills. We don't want anyone to dread coming to train or become "gun shy" . We want your techniques to be correct when applying skills in the ring or while training don't have to spar or get hit if you don't want to, but it helps show you how your skills apply in "live conditions". You will gain confidence when you spar and appreciate all the hard work it took to get you there. When you spar, you will learn to correctly apply what you have been taught and how these skills work in actual ring combat. All sparring is supervised and controlled to assure that you don't get hurt. If you don't want to be involved in contact sparring but want to train for conditioning purposes only, we will not push you to spar.
So, if you want to learn the art of boxing, for competition or fitness in a safe and friendly environment, then keep looking through this site and you'll find out that you have found the right gym. If you are interested in boxing from a coach who have been in the ring and can teach you these skills, then give us a call or e-mail.
![]() The core of our program is our amateur boxing team. We travel across the southeastern United States to amateur competitions. You will start out on a 2-week boxing conditioning program to begin to get your body in "boxing shape". Once you finish the conditioning program, you will start learning the "sweet science" three days per week and do your boxing conditioning also; and two days out of the week will be devoted to conditioning only. You will start with learning the proper stance and progress to the basic punches, defense, and putting it all together. You will also be taught counterpunching, head movement and al the tools a boxer needs to survive in the ring. It takes about 3-months to have a grasp on the basics. If you have the heart and desire to train with us for six month to a year, you will be at a level where you will not make many beginner mistakes on a regular basis.
The Fitness Program is the same training program as the Competition Boxing Program but you are not required to compete or even spar.
Private boxing Training is taught by former amateur boxing champion and Level II USA Boxing coach Curt McCune. He has first hand experience in the ring and has trained extensively himself in Las Vegas, Nevada. Curt will get you in shape then start transforming you into a boxer. Curt has over 23 years in the sport and is sought after by boxers from all over the southeast and the state of Alabama to train them.
